Discover Southeast Alaska

JUL. 14-21, 2017
Sitka, Glacier National Park, Auke Bay, Tracy Arm, Juneau
Aboard Admiralty Dream

The awesome forces of nature are on full display in Alaska—mountains eroded by massive glaciers, icebergs crowding aquamarine seas, the cycles of plants and animals compressed into the scant weeks of an exuberant arctic summer. Spend eight days navigating the waterways of the Inside Passage aboard 66-passenger Admiralty Dream and witness wildlife up close from its kayaks and skiffs. Learn about Alaska’s culture at a traditional Tlingit dance performance, current ice field research at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, and industry with a visit to a salmon hatchery. With skilled expedition leaders by your side, encounter its abundant wildlife, magnificent peaks and fjords, and ice-blue glaciers of unfathomable proportions—while learning about the traditions of Alaska’s ancient cultures.

UCLA Faculty on Tour

JEAN-LUC MARGOT
Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences
Jean-Luc Margot is a planetary astronomer who conducts research on the properties of habitable worlds using a variety of spacecraft and telescopes, including the largest telescope on Earth at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, the twin Keck telescopes on Mauna Kea in Hawaii, and the Kepler space observatory. His passion for exploration has been inspired in part by the extraordinary voyages of Captain James Cook, who surveyed the Alaskan coastline in 1778. On this exciting cruise, Margot will describe the tidal effects of the Moon and the Sun, the icy landscapes on Earth and on Jupiter's icy moon Europa, life in extreme environments, and the search for extraterrestrial life.
