Provence and the French Côte d’Azur conjure visions of sunny olive groves, lavender fields and the vineyards of the Côtes du Rhône. Settle in Avignon and begin your exploration with a visit to the Palace of the Popes and a cruise on the Rhône. Continue on to see Arles and its Roman amphitheater, the hilltop village of Les Baux, and St. Remy where Van Gogh once lived. Visit Châteauneuf-du-Pape, known for its superb wine. Marvel at the ingenious Pont du Gard, the three-level Roman aqueduct. On the drive to Cannes, discover the town of Aix-en-Provence. Explore Cannes and nearby Sainte-Marguerite Island. Discover glamorous Monaco and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and the exquisite Villa de Rothschild. Local guides and expert speakers provide fascinating insights during included excursions and lectures. MICHAEL ALLEN
Department of English
Michael Allen is a distinguished research professor in the English department, a winner of the Eby award for undergraduate teaching, and, among other honors, a Fellow of the British Academy. He has taught medieval and Renaissance literature and notably Shakespeare and Chaucer here for over forty years and has lectured far and wide on Renaissance humanism, philosophy, and theology. Though the bulk of his scholarly contribution has been in the history of Platonism at the court of Lorenzo de’ Medici, he has studied and taught the great authors of the French Renaissance, including Ronsard, Rabelais, and Montaigne; and he is a lifetime Francophile. He and his artist wife Elena have been the hosts on a number of UCLA Alumni trips, most recently to Turkey, rural France, Apulia, Sicily and southern Spain.
