UCLA Faculty on Tour

Michael Allen
Department of English
Michael Allen is a distinguished research professor in our English department, a winner of the Eby award for undergraduate teaching, and, among other honors, a Fellow of the British Academy. He has taught medieval and Renaissance literature and notably Shakespearean, Chaucerian, and Arthurian texts for over forty years, and has lectured far and wide on the Bard and on Renaissance humanism, philosophy, magic, and theology. Though the bulk of his scholarly contribution has been in the history of Platonism at the court of Lorenzo de’ Medici, and he has long been interested too in the medieval world; moreover, he has a good dose of Celtic blood, mainly Scots and Irish, in his veins! He and his artist wife Elena have been the hosts on a number of UCLA Alumni trips, most recently to Turkey, rural France, Apulia, Sicily, southern Spain, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
