UCLA Faculty on Tour

Kathryn McDonnell
UCLA Professor of Classics
Kathryn McDonnell is an assistant professor in the department of classics, specializing in the archaeology and material culture of the Greek and Roman worlds. She taught at Cornell University and the College of Charleston before joining UCLA in 2007, where her research focuses on the social aspects of tomb construction, the archaeology of non-elites and historical and ancient slavery. She has worked at excavation sites across the Classical World including Italy, England, Israel and Turkey, and has co-directed excavations near Rome. McDonnell lived in Italy as an undergraduate student and later as a Fulbright Scholar, and she still spends several months there every year conducting research on Roman tombs. She has traveled extensively in Italy and the Mediterranean, and, like the Roman emperors, she considers the Amalfi Coast to be one of the most beautiful places in the world.
