Comparative Literature
Efrain Kristal is professor and chair of UCLA's Department of Comparative Literature where he works in topics in Spanish, French, German and Italian, and in the philosophy of art. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University and was a research fellow at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa where he studied the Italian contexts of Nicolas Poussin, a French painter based in Rome whose mentor was a great poet from Naples. Kristal regularly teaches Dante's Divine Comedy in undergraduate courses, has a special interest in Italian art, and is translating a book by the Italian philosopher Remo Bodei. For his notable efforts, Efrain was awarded the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award and in 2015 he was also selected to deliver the distinguished 118th UCLA Faculty Research Lecture.



DAY 1 | June 14. IN TRANSIT
Depart for Naples, Italy.

DAY 2 | June 15. Naples/Sorrento
Upon arrival, transfer to Sorrento and the Hotel Plaza Sorrento.Tonight, attend a Welcome Reception and Dinner.

DAY 3 | June 16. Amalfi Coast/Positano/Almafi
Educational Focus: The History and the Beauty of Campania.
Excursion: The Charm of the Amalfi Coast. Drive along the fabled Amalfi Coast. Enjoy leisure time in Positano, Italy’s most vertical town. In Amalfi, enjoy a walk through the town and see the Duomo di Sant’Andrea and the piazza.
Local Flavor: Lunch today is at a restaurant in Amalfi.

DAY 4 | June 17. Paestum
Excursion: Mozzarella di Bufala. Visit a dairy farm where mozzarella cheese is produced from the milk of buffalo, which were introduced to the area in the 10th century. Enjoy a tasting of this famous cheese.
Excursion: Paestum. After being abandoned in the ninth century, this Greco-Roman city was overgrown by vegetation and forgotten until the 18th century. See a variety of ruins, including three well-preserved Doric temples.
Educational Focus and Local Flavor: Meet the People. Chat with local residents during lunch at a restaurant in Paestum.
Educational Focus: The Wonders of Naples’ National Archaeological Museum.
Local Flavor: Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

DAY 5 | June 18. Naples
Excursion: Naples and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale. Enjoy a panoramic tour of the historic center of Naples. Start at the top of Posillipo Hill for a view of the city and the entire Bay of Naples, then drive into the city and see Castel Nuovo, San Francesco di Paola, Teatro Carlo and Piazza Plebiscito. Visit the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples. Its collection of artwork and other objects from Herculaneum and Pompeii makes it one of the most important archaeological museums in the world.
Local Flavor: At lunch, try the famous Neapolitan pizza.

DAY 6 | June 19. Sorrento
Independent Exploration: Discover new facets of Sorrento on your own.
Educational Focus: The Horror and Splendor of Vesuvius.
Local Flavor: Dinner today is at a restaurant in Sorrento.

DAY 7 | June 20. Pompeii/Herculaneum
Excursion: Pompeii and Herculaneum. The cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii were destroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79. The small seaside town of Herculaneum was preserved by mudflows, while Pompeii was covered with ash. Marvel at the treasures found at both sites.
Local Flavor: Enjoy lunch at a restaurant near Pompeii.

DAY 8 | June 21. Sorrento
Educational Focus: Contemporary Italy.
Independent Exploration: Enjoy your final day at your leisure. Tonight, attend a Farewell Reception, Graduation Ceremony and a Farewell Dinner.

DAY 9 | June 22. IN TRANSIT
Transfer to the airport for the return flight to your gateway city.
