Moroccan Discovery

On this 14-day tour, Morocco invites with its ancient ruins, sacred mosques, lush desert oases, and fortified villages where life proceeds much as it has for centuries.  Beginning in Rabat, you will travel to Fez with its acclaimed pottery and ceramics, Erfoud with its kasbah – style hotel, Ouarzazate, Marrakech and Casablanca. You will visit five UNESCO World Heritage sites including Meknes, Morocco’s youngest imperial city; Volubulis, with its ancient Roman ruins; and Fez, prized for its cultural, religious, and educational institutions.  Watch the sun set over the desert as you take a camel ride across the dunes, take in one beautiful scene after another in the snow-topped High Atlas Mountains, see spectacular Todra Gorge, and travel to the fortified city of Ait-Ben-Haddou. Spend three nights in alluring Marrakech and enjoy a walking tour of the medina before concluding in storied Casablanca.

UCLA Faculty on Tour

Department of Classics
Robert Gurval is associate professor in the UCLA Department of Classics. His area of research and teaching concern ancient Rome and the legacy of its empire in popular culture. Cleopatra is a special interest. Gurval’s publications focus on politics, literature and culture in the age of the Caesars. He earned his B.A. in Classics at Brown University and his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. He has taught at UCLA since 1990 where he has served as chair of the Department of Classics and of the faculty committees on the Honors College, General Education Governance, and Undergraduate Honors, Awards and Prizes. Gurval is currently the director of the Mellon program in post-classical Latin. He is the recipient of the Rome Prize at the American Academy at Rome, the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award known as the Eby Award for the Art of Teaching and the American Philological Association’s Excellence in Teaching Award for university professors. He regularly leads the UCLA Summer Travel Study Program in Rome, and most recently he has taught a seminar on Augustus: The First Emperor in Rome at universities in Shanghai and Beijing. Since 2005, Gurval has participated as a faculty lecturer on nine UCLA Alumni Travel tours.
