Aaron A. Burke is editor-in-chief of the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press, and Professor of Near Eastern Archaeology with the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Los Angeles. He received his Ph.D. with a focus in Levantine Archaeology from The Oriental Institute at The University of Chicago in 2004. Since 2007, as director of the Jaffa Cultural Heritage Project, he has conducted excavations of a New Kingdom Egyptian fortress in Jaffa, Israel, which were funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. In addition to his first monograph, “Walled Up to Heaven”: The Evolution of Middle Bronze Age Fortification Strategies in the Levant (Eisenbrauns, 2008), he has written numerous articles on warfare in the Bronze and Iron ages, and has co-edited two volumes resulting from his archaeological work in Jaffa published through the Cotsen Institute Press. His interests include the archaeology of Ancient Israel, warfare, and cultural transformations in the Bronze and Iron Ages in the ancient Near East and the Mediterranean with particular attention to the archaeology of refugees, forced migration, and identifying the ensuing cultural changes that are documented in archaeological and textual sources. Since 1994 he has worked in Israel, Turkey, and Egypt, and travelled extensively in Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon.
