UCLA Faculty on Tour

Kevin McKeegan
Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences
Kevin McKeegan, professor of cosmochemistry and geochemistry in the Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences, is one of the world’s leading experts in the laboratory analysis of extraterrestrial materials. At UCLA, he and his colleagues have built high-resolution mass spectrometers that have been used to determine the isotopic compositions of samples of asteroids, comets, the Moon, and even the Sun. The asteroid samples arrive at the Earth as meteorites, many of which have been collected on the blue-ice fields of Antarctica. In recognition of his work on understanding processes occurring in the early solar system through studies of components of meteorites, asteroid 5663 was named “McKeegan” by the International Astronomical Union.
