UCLA Faculty on Tour

Alex Hall
Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences
Alex Hall is professor in Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability and Director of the Center for Climate Science at UCLA. His research focuses on climate change at both global and regional scales. At the global scale, he works to reduce uncertainty surrounding processes within the climate system, called climate feedbacks, that can either exacerbate or mitigate the planet's response to an increase in greenhouse gas concentrations. He uses current observations to constrain global climate model simulations of climate feedbacks, particularly those related to the melting and retreat of snow and sea ice. At the regional scale, Alex develops techniques to understand climate change impacts at scales relevant to decision-makers. He and his team recently wrapped up a comprehensive project on future snow loss in the Sierra Nevada and its implications for California’s water resources.
