In modern cities and centuries-old ruins, discover the diversity of Southeast Asia during a 10-night journey to Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia. George Dutton
Department of Asian Languages & Cultures
George Dutton is Director of the UCLA Center for Southeast Asian Studies and Professor in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures where he is a specialist in Vietnamese history. He trained more broadly as a Southeast Asianist after falling in love with the region as an undergraduate exchange student at the National University of Singapore. He has been visiting and conducting research across Southeast Asia since 1987. At UCLA he teaches courses on all aspects of Southeast Asia from literature and religion to ethnicity and colonialism. He is co-editor of the definitive volume on Vietnamese historical texts, Sources of Vietnamese Tradition. He is also the author of two books on early modern Vietnamese history, The Tay Son Uprising: Society and Rebellion in Eighteenth-Century Vietnam (Hawaii Press, 2006) and A Vietnamese Moses Philiphê Bỉnh and the Geographies of Early Modern Catholicism (UC Press, 2016).
